The Mensa scholarship program is open to applicants who will be enrolled next academic year in a degree program in an accredited U.S. college or university, and who are citizens or permanent residents of the United States. The applicant need not be a member of Mensa nor qualified for Mensa. The Mensa Foundation scholarships are awarded solely on the merits of the essay written by the applicant. The awards are not affected by age, race, gender, level of post-secondary education, or financial need.
Awards will be made on the basis of an essay of no more than 550 words. The essay is to describe the applicant's career, vocational, or academic goal. We encourage students to carefully proofread their essay. The essays will be judged and scholarships will be awarded at three levels: local, regional, and national. The State Fair of West Virginia, in association with corporate, civic and individual contributors, will offer five, four year scholarships up to $1,000 in 2017. The State Fair Scholarship Program recognizes youth who have participated in the State Fair, excel academically and have a proven financial need. Applicants must be pursuing a vocational trade, associate or bachelor degree. All applicants must have participated in the junior livestock show, equine show or 4-H and FFA Youth exhibit program within the previous five years. Letters About Literature, a project of the West Virginia Center for the Book, is a reading and writing contest for students in grades 4-12. Students are asked to read a book, poem or speech and write to that author (living or dead) about how the book affected them personally. Letters About Literature awards prizes on both the state and national levels. A panel of West Virginia judges will select the top essayists in our state. State winners will receive a cash award and advance to the national level judging. A panel of national judges for the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress will select one national winner per competition level. The deadline for entry is January 12. The US Senate Foundation awards $1,000 grants to incoming college freshmen. The grants are awarded on the basis of scholarship, a personal statement outlining the applicant's college goals, demonstrated leadership ability, financial need and other criteria. The applications are judged on a point system. Each point can make a difference in winning. It is important that students maximize each of their points in section VI, References. Completed application forms must be postmarked no later than January 5, 2017. Winners will be notified on or about April 15, 2015. See the guidance office for an application.
Students the Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation scholarship application is now available online. The deadline for this scholarship application is January 15th. There are 90 different scholarship opportunities through this foundation. Last year 400 scholarships were awarded totaling over $400,000. To apply online visit tgkvf.org.
The GE-Reagan Foundation Scholarship Program offers $10,000 renewable scholarships to students who demonstrate exemplary leadership, drive, integrity, and citizenship. The ROTC National Scholarship Program (http://www.goarmy.com/rotc/high-school-students/four-year-scholarship.html) provides high-achieving students with both four- and three-year scholarships that pay for full university tuition and fees OR room and board valued at $10,000/year. Contracted scholarship students also receive $600/semester for books and a monthly ROTC tax-free stipend that ranges from $350 (sophomore year) to $450 (junior year) and $500 (senior year). The application portal is open from June through early January for high school seniors to start an application. Minuteman Scholarships are also available that will allow students to complete their service obligation in the Army Reserve or National Guard while receiving full tuition assistance and living stipends.
Army ROTC is a leadership development class taken in conjunction with general education and major specific classes for both undergraduate and also graduate students. Upon completion of the program, required training events, and graduation, all contracted students are commissioned as second lieutenants in the active Army, Army National Guard, or Army Reserve. The National Wild Turkey Federation scholarship is now available. Students who are current members of the NWTF with a GPA at or above a 3.0 should apply for the scholarship. Students must support the preservation of the hunting tradition and actively participate in hunting sports. Click here for an application. The National High School Oratorical Scholarship Program is a constitutional speech contest. Students will prepare an oration on the Constitution of the United States.
